Tomb of Annihilation (Session 15) Swamps & Nightmares

 

The party push on after the Assassin Vine attack and as the sun sinks behind the trees find somewhere to camp. Alyssia finishes translating the Wizards journal with the tale seeming to end in madness and death. They spoke of whispers in the jungle then seemed to lose their amulet of control.

They set up a watch with the Camp's soldiers and local hunters assisting. It's when all are asleep a voice is heard, “Well Widow Groat what is your plan?”, “patience Sister, lets see what the fools make of the blindmans gold” a sound of a cockerel squawking or a laughing third voice echoes as they wake into a room...

Looking around a large stone hall they see dozens of bodies with gold coins in their eyes. At one end a wooden door carved with an old crones face also with coins in it's eyes. The party is extremely cautious and Orion carefully makes her way over to the door to investigate it. As Alyssia muses on any religious meaning Orion concurs coins in the eyes are a common place tradition for the dead.
It's then that Thavakean opens his Magical Awareness senses for the first time. The room is covered in rainbow colours  while the door glows blue and the bodes emanate an ominous black aura. The professor goes on to explain Thavakean is seeing the schools of magic as simply as she can. Thavakean decides after it must just be his companions fault. 
As they continue to investigate Thavakean starts checking the walls - running in to them. Alyssia decides to try identify the door magic while Orion keeps an eye on the bodies. As Alyssia realises the door has some sort of horrible aging trap It's then that Orion spots movement.


A doll sized clay figure with no face wanders out from behind some bodies. It waves at them then proceeds to walk over to Orion and the door. After a few minutes it draws some eyes on its face. Orion decides it wants some eyes like the bodies and sticks 2 gold coins in it's eyes. The little Clay Noface jumps about excited then points at the door and Orion again. They eventually figure to imitate the little figure and Orion puts 2 coins in her eyes and fumbles about for the handle opening the door to a misty corridor. 

The party head down and snap awake in the swamp where they were resting!

The 2 Order of the Gauntlet Guards are gone with tracks leading away indicating they had fled. Left with just the 2 local hunters they continue on at dawn.

It's not long before Thavakean spells something rotten and Orion hears creature too. Scouting ahead with her Owl familiar they identify a pack of Ghouls gnawing on bodies. One rips an arm up that seems clothed in a red sleeve. Inete seems to think it could be the red robes from her vision leaving the party in a quandary to attack or avoid a potentially difficult fight...

  As Orion wonders how to respond to the guard saying it's Camp Vengeance Undril steps forth, "I am Undril Silvertusk, sent to support the Order of the Gauntlet". With that declaration there is some excited chatter at the gatehouse and some cheers of "reinforcements are here!" as the party are allowed inside - except Crumb who the guards insist must stay outside. As the party enter inside they are greeted by Captain Perne Salhana. She seems glad the party is here and tells them many are sick and wounded. The hopes of nice rest are dashed as they realise the camp is in a sorry state. Commander Niles Breakbone steps out from his Command Tent hearing the talking outside muttering something about the Order letting anyone in these days then starts barking orders for the Captain to get them set to work before returning to his tent. Tomb of Annihilation (Session 18)

  Noting the ice as another mystery of the jungle the party continue on. A heavy mist descends upon the Aldani Basin making visibility drop to only about a dozen feet.  Later in the afternoon as they continue through the Aldani Basin something stirs in the swampy water. Three  Giant Crocodiles come lunging out attacking the party! One of the two remaining Tribal Warriors is torn in half, while Crumb is viciously attacked along with Eku.  The remaining warrior rushed forward plunging his spear into the Crocodile attacking Eku and ducking a tail swipe from the creature. As Thavakean explodes with rage, shadowy tendrils lash out at all the Crocodiles as he brings his axe down on the one attacking his faithful dinosaur.  Meanwhile Inete retreats over to Orion who is blasts away at the one clutching Eku with a Scorching Ray. Tomb of Annihilation (Session 19)

  After the shocked servant finishes screaming and the guards have been calmed down by Thavakean showing off his Dinosaur Race medal they find themselves in Wakanga's company once more. They update Wakanga that they still haven't found the Construct but have a lead. They also find out he could help transport them back to Valindra's Teleportation Circle when they head back out. After a bath Alyssia heads to Wakangas shop to barter. It doesn't go terrifically well but she does make a deal to spend a few days making scrolls to earn some money.  Meanwhile Thavakean finds a way to earn a bit more by heading back to the Colosseum. Taking on 4 panthers they initially knock him down biting into the mighty Goliath. He stands back up though and in a rage of exploding shadow proceeds to cut them down one at a time.
